At Angel Aviation, commercial pilot applicants are expected to develop a thorough understanding of human factors and their effect on flight safety. This requires more than memorizing the IMSAFE checklist. A commercial pilot should be able to recognize physiological and psychological conditions that may degrade performance, understand their operational significance, and take appropriate action before safety is compromised.

Safe flight depends not only on the condition of the aircraft and operating environment, but also on the fitness, judgment, and decision-making ability of the pilot.

Pilot Fitness – IMSAFE

A pilot should assess physical and mental fitness before every flight. The IMSAFE checklist provides a practical framework for this evaluation:

Illness – Even minor illness can affect concentration, judgment, vision, coordination, and overall performance. Consider both the severity of the symptoms and their potential effect on flight duties.

Medication – Prescription and over-the-counter medications may produce side effects such as drowsiness, delayed reaction time, or impaired judgment. Consider both the medication and the underlying condition being treated.

Stress – Personal, professional, financial, and training-related stress can reduce concentration and decision-making ability. Pilots should recognize when stress is affecting their ability to safely manage a flight.

Alcohol – FAA regulations establish minimum requirements regarding alcohol consumption and flight operations, including the eight-hour restriction and 0.04% blood alcohol concentration limit. These are regulatory minimums, not measures of fitness. Residual effects can continue to impair performance after the regulatory limitations have been satisfied.

Fatigue – Fatigue reduces alertness, reaction time, situational awareness, and judgment. Pilots should consider the quality and quantity of rest received, as well as the anticipated duration and workload of the flight.

Emotion/Eating – Strong emotions, anxiety, distraction, inadequate nutrition, and poor hydration can negatively affect concentration and decision-making.

Hypoxia

Hypoxia occurs when the body’s tissues receive insufficient oxygen. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, impaired judgment, visual impairment, and euphoria.

A significant danger of hypoxia is the pilot’s reduced ability to recognize the impairment as it develops. Pilots should understand the causes and types of hypoxia, factors that increase susceptibility, and appropriate corrective actions.

Hyperventilation

Hyperventilation is an excessive rate or depth of breathing that causes an abnormal reduction in carbon dioxide levels. Symptoms may include dizziness, tingling, visual disturbances, and lightheadedness and can closely resemble the symptoms of hypoxia.

When hyperventilation is suspected, the pilot should consciously slow and regulate breathing while continuing to evaluate the possibility of hypoxia.

Spatial Disorientation

Spatial disorientation occurs when the body’s sensory systems provide inaccurate or conflicting information regarding aircraft attitude, position, or movement. The risk increases significantly when reliable outside visual references are unavailable.

Pilots should be familiar with common vestibular illusions, including the leans, Coriolis illusion, graveyard spiral, somatogravic illusion, and inversion illusion, as well as visual illusions associated with night operations, approaches, and featureless terrain.

When bodily sensations conflict with the flight instruments, the pilot must rely on the instruments and maintain a disciplined instrument scan.

Motion Sickness

Motion sickness may result when the visual and vestibular systems provide conflicting information about movement. Symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, sweating, and general discomfort.

Maintaining outside visual references, minimizing unnecessary head movement, increasing fresh airflow, and maintaining positive aircraft control can help reduce its effects.

 

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that may enter the cabin through a malfunctioning exhaust or heating system. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, confusion, and impaired judgment.

If carbon monoxide contamination is suspected, disable cabin heat, maximize fresh airflow, use supplemental oxygen if available, and land as soon as practical.

Dehydration and Heat

Dehydration and excessive heat can contribute to fatigue, headache, dizziness, reduced concentration, and impaired decision-making. These risks are particularly important during prolonged flights and hot-weather operations.

External Pressures

External pressures are influences that may encourage a pilot to continue or complete a flight despite increasing risk. These may include schedules, passenger expectations, business commitments, financial considerations, or pressure to complete a training event or practical test.

Professional pilots must recognize these influences and prevent them from overriding sound aeronautical decision-making. Delaying, modifying, diverting, or discontinuing a flight when conditions warrant is an appropriate use of pilot judgment.

Are external factors influencing my judgment?

Recognizing when pilot performance may become the limiting factor—and taking action before safety is compromised—is a fundamental component of professional aviation decision-making.
